Ruth Barth Schneider Newby, 94, passed away Feb. 7, at Missoula’s Riverside Nursing Home of Alzheimer’s Disease and being tired.
Funeral services were held on Feb. 15 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Days Saints. Graveside services followed at Lakeview Cemetery. Pondera Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Ruth was born to Charles F. and Anna (Rhode) Barth in Ophiem on Oct. 14, 1919. She was raised on their farm and had no siblings. She attended the Country school and made the eight miles daily by walking, riding horse or by sleigh. Ruth attended high school and graduated from Nashua High School.
After graduation, she went by train to Great Falls to attend Great Falls Business School. Later her father sent her to Valier to work for Mrs. G. Stoltz. Ruth met Wesley J. Schneider and they were married May 20, 1939. Wes worked for Parkers, Jack Goff, farmed C.J. Parmelus’ land before buying the Conoco Service Station, “Wesley Service”. Later, the J.I. Case business was added.
They had two children, Carrol Swanson and Charles W. (Jean) Schneider.
Wes passed away Aug. 23, 1963, about six months before their 25th wedding anniversary. In September of 1964, Ruth married Ray Newby. Together they continued running the Conoco Station. They sold the station and started “Ruth’s Salvage and Scrap” business, which they managed until retirement.
Survivors include children, Carrol Schneider Swanson of Great Falls and Charles W. (Jean) Schneider of St. Peters, Mo.; stepchildren, Denny, Rick and Bruce Newby, and Joy (Fred) Alberts, all of Polson, and Tamera Newby of Kalispell; three grandsons, David (Roberta) Swanson of Castro Valley, Calif., Dan (Kelly) Swanson of Manhattan, and Dale (Lisa) Swanson of Great Falls; great-grandsons, Dean (Summer) Swanson of Spark, Nev., Ben (Kristen) Swanson of Escondido, Calif., Travis Swanson, of Bozeman; great-granddaughters, Grace Swanson of Silver Springs, Md., Mariah Swanson of Great Falls, and Amanda Swanson of Manhattan; and great-great-granddaughters, Makayla, Sloan, Zoe’, Aris and Mackenzie Swanson; great-great-grandson, Omri; and several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Wesley Schneider and Ray Newby; and son-in-law, Tom Swanson.
